182 Art Space will present a solo exhibition of a Japanese emerging art unit ‘intext’, whose works had been exhibited in the Insights section of Art Basel Hong Kong in 2018. Graphic designers Yusuke Mimasu, Hiroshi Toyama and programmer Takehisa Mashimo form intext, reconsidering the present state of text, image and sound media communications, instead giving rise to a universal message in relation to language and culture. In the exhibition at Art Basel Hong Kong, intext’s works counteracted the function of media and content communication such as books and dictionaries, revealing a more universal message and thereby pressing the viewers to reconsider the core implications of the communication we see, read, hear and touch, under the theme of ‘DEATH OF FUNCTIONS’. Since they received lots of attention in the global art scene in 2018, intext’s works have continued to develop even today.

This exhibition will feature intext’s new works expanding the idea of ‘DEATH OF FUNCTIONS’ and focusing on their current interest ‘uncertain’. The title ‘WHAT IS THE COLOR OF MIRROR?’ represents the multifaceted and unstable world of ‘uncertain’ interpreted from a unique perspective by intext. The show introduces intext’s works created by processing the apparatuses such as dictionaries, maps and mirrors, from which we usually understand the world. The question ‘what the color of mirror is’ symbolizes the attraction of ambivalent state itself, in which the mirror is able to reflect all the color in the world but at the same time the mirror itself cannot turn any color. It seems that ‘uncertain’ state has a tendency to be disliked and avoided in the competitive society based on the accelerated globalization for people prefer quick and proper decision. Under these circumstances, intext’s works invite viewers to recognize that our world is not originally the state of being uniform. By considering the state of ‘uncertain’ as more positive and easier, their works aim to reconsider a new viewpoint and sensibility within both art and society today.

DEATH OF FUNCTIONS

WHAT IS THE COLOR OF MIRROR ?
「WHAT IS THE COLOR OF MIRROR ?」
